Avoid GMO’s in 6 easy steps

GMO avoidance tips

GMO’s (Gentetically Modified Organisms) are a big No-No. Why? I could go into a long scientific explanation, but for me is very simple, they are not natural, their DNA has been changed and altered to make them more “productive” or “resistant” that is enough said to make me change my mind. I usually look into natures order to find the answer to many questions, and GMO’s are far-far away from the natural order of things. So how can you avoid them? well is not that easy, most of the corn grown in USA is GMO, and corn is in almost all processed foods. Go ahead read the labels, corn starch, corn syrup, corn-meal, or it is being fed to the animals some of us eat.

NP-Shelf-DisplayHere are some tips to make it easier to avoid GMO’s

  1. There are two stamps on any food label that let you know there are no GMO’s in the product. The USDA Certified Organic or the None GMO Verified seal.
  2. Try to avoid consuming conventional Corn and Soy products, this two crops are mostly genetically modified in the USA and Canada. Also be on the look-out for cotton-seed and canola oil, or beet sugar, which are also widely GMO’s
  3. Almost 80% of packaged foods containg GMO’s, choose natural un-processed foods
  4. Remember that the term Natural in food products is not regulated, and most of the time doesn’t mean anything.
  5. Most of the time conventional milk and milk products come from cows fed GMO corn or soy, and worst one-third of the commercial milking cows have been injected with GMO growth hormones (rBGH), which are passed to the milk we consume.
  6. Unless packaged cereals are Organic or Non-GMO project verified, try to avoid them. Most of them are full of GMO’s, even if they say natural or are sold at the Health Food Store.

What is Monsanto hiding?

If you are into organics, farming, local food or sustainability you must have heard about Proposition 37. What is Proposition 37? Well is pretty simple, the state of California will be voting on whether or not GMO ingredients should be listed on food labels. I personally think they SHOULD be listed. Consumers have a right to know what they are eating and feeding their families. For me is all a matter of principles, and transparency. But apparently this big multi-nationals are NOT as transparent.

The leader of the GMO movement (lets call it that) is a company named Monsanto. They assure GMO’s are safe and harmless, and that by their great advances in GMO’s they will solve world hunger (in a nut shell). My questions is if they are so “sure” GMO’s are safe why are they contributing so much money ($7.1 million until today) to kill Proposition 37. If they have nothing to hide they shouldn’t be scared of adding a simple words (this contains GMO ingredients) to food labels.
